Importance The article examines the economic potential of gas distribution in Russia, which will ensure the reliability of the current gas supply to consumers and prospects of the regions' gasification development.
Objectives The research identifies and analyzes the arising trends and patterns in changing economic potential of the gas distribution sector as a whole and separate classification groups.
Methods The research involves methods of external financial analysis at the macroeconomic level, statistical methods of factor, cluster and discriminant analysis, methods of the regional economy theory, and computer technologies of statistical data collection and processing. The gas distribution sector faced the decline in financial sustainability of gas distribution organizations.
Results I provide the rationale for a new effective tariff-setting model in gas distribution that regards existing correlations in financial position of organizations and potential for reasonable cost reduction and concurrently ensures the reliability of gas supply and development of gasification in the Russian regions.
Conclusions and Relevance Arising trends can engender hazardous factors that influence the security of gas distribution networks and limit the regions' gasification. The most substantial risks are seen in organizations that have high compound tariffs, i.e. an integral indicators that determine their behavior in the regulated segment of the domestic gas market and significantly influence the amount of unit operating costs. The findings can be used to address issues of forecasting the gas supply development and gasification of the Russian regions, and substantiate new tariff-setting models in gas distribution.
