Importance Whereas production volumes grow to satisfy human needs, the depletion of natural resources and environmental pollution exceeded acceptable levels. Therefore, initiatives for reducing resource and energy intensity of national products become a priority all over the world.
Objectives The research reviews opportunities of using the resource-oriented economic analysis methodology in relation to energy efficiency and energy consumption of economic systems of various hierarchical levels and purpose; devises sustainable development evaluation algorithms (models).
Methods We apply the resource-oriented economic analysis methodology, and the hypothesis implying that the sustainable development depends on trends in output and resources consumed.
Results The success of any economic system depends on the availability of unique resources and organizational capabilities (competencies). We devised a factor model of additive nature, which was feasible through economic analysis algorithms. Sustainable development of economic systems requires reducing energy consumption.
Conclusions and Relevance Energy efficiency and energy saving factors can be analyzed on the basis of the resource-oriented economic analysis methodology.

Keywords: economic systems, resource-oriented approach, energy efficiency, energy saving, sustainable development, model
