Importance The modern regional aviation is one of civil aviation segments covering the needs for transport mobility of citizens living in remote regions, and functioning as a ‘supplier’ for long-haul and international flights. After vain attempts to penetrate this market with Russian projects of the 80th (Tupolev TU-334, Ilyushin IL-114) and Russian-Ukrainian projects (Antonov AN-148 and AN-140), the Russian regional aviation has the only new competitive product of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), namely, SSJ 100 98-seater liner.
Objectives The aim of the study is to analyze the actual state of things in the world regional aviation market and to search for ways of Russian expansion therein.
Methods The study draws on the comparative analysis of the world regional aircraft manufacturers’ operations in terms of seating capacity in all segments of the market, which is influenced by the new hub-and-spoke structure of air service organization.
Results The analysis shows how global manufacturers responded to changes in demand in the regional aviation market. The Russian aviation industry should either promptly react to the changed demand or accept aircraft of foreign manufacturers in the Russian regional fleet.
Conclusions At present, only UAC, more specifically, Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company, its subsidiary, is engaged in regional aircraft manufacturing. I believe, it is necessary to demonopolize the aviation industry. The paper gives some examples of diversification.
