Importance During recent years, Russia has significantly strengthened its position in the global car market. Among other things, this is subject to the introduction of industrial car assembly regime, which led to radically new development of the automotive industry. In this regard, the study of problems and prospects of the Russian car industry seems to be strategically crucial. Objectives The main goals of the study are to identify the main system problems in the Russian car industry, to review the results of implementing the industrial assembly regime for foreign makes, to analyze production volumes and car sales dynamics in Russia, and to identify priority development areas of the car industry. Methods The article provides the analysis of dynamics and structure of production volumes and car sales during recent years, estimates the introduction of industrial car assembly regime and analyzes government measures aimed at Russian car industry development. Results We provide characteristics of the current state of domestic car industry. We also present a set of government measures to overcome the main problems in the Russian automotive industry. Conclusions The conclusion is that significant positive changes in the Russian car industry mostly depend on the introduction of industrial car assembly regime. We have identified the main development areas: increasing the localization level, strengthening cooperation with major foreign car makers, and creating the competitive car components market.
